Frequently Asked Questions

How Rental Costs Are Calculated

If I pick up my rental vehicle at 4.00pm on a Friday and drop it back before 4.00pm on the following Friday, is this counted as a 7 day hire?

Yes, our hire rates are calculated on a 24 hour basis.

When do I have to pay the vehicle hire cost?

With our all of our rental vehicles, the cost of your hire needs to be paid at the time of vehicle collection or can be prepaid prior to pick up by calling our friendly staff.

As our rental trucks and rental vans do have mileage fees, any excess mileage charges will be deducted off the refundable bond that is paid on vehicle collection.

Charge back accounts are to approved account holders only.

Short Hire Refunds

Is there a refund if I bring my hire vehicle back early?

Early returns of the vehicle may incur a penalty and/or a recalculation of the daily rate. Any refund or charge is solely at our discretion.

International Visitors

With world class scenery at every turn, a self-drive holiday is a great way to experience and see all that New Zealand has to offer. Before beginning to plan your journey, there are a few things that you’ll need to know about driving in New Zealand.

We drive on the left-hand side of the road here, some of our roads are narrow, windy and have loose gravel… and it’s not unusual to see sheep or cattle on roads in rural areas. You need to give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination, and to understand New Zealand road rules and signs.

Even if you have driven in other countries, it’s important to understand our rules for driving in New Zealand before you get behind the wheel here.

Driver’s Licence

Do I need a special licence to drive a Rent Me Rentals vehicle?

No. As long as you are over 21 years of age and hold a current valid driver’s licence, your country of origin licence is acceptable. A normal car licence is all that is required to drive any of our vehicles.

No maximum age limit applies providing an appropriate valid licence is held by the hirer.

Non–English licence holders must carry an accurate English translation of their licence or an International Driving Permit while driving. The English translation document must be issued by one of the following authorities:

  • The New Zealand Translation Service
  • A diplomatic representative at a High Commission, Embassy or Consulate
  • The authority that issued your overseas driver’s licence

All International drivers are reminded of the New Zealand driving laws, we drive on the left side of the road and it is prudent for you to acquaint yourself with the rules and regulations pertaining to driving in New Zealand prior to renting from us.

Extra Drivers

Is there an additional charge for extra drivers?

No, Rent Me Rentals encourages you to register more than one person to share the driving for safety reasons.

Breakdown Service

Do you have a breakdown service?

Yes, all our rental vehicles are registered with AA breakdown service. All you need to do is call the 0800 phone number which is located on the card in each vehicle’s glove box or sticker on the windscreen and an AA technician will attend to you. Please note: All our vehicles are regularly Maintained and serviced to the highest standard.

Fuel

Do I have to pay for petrol or diesel?

Each rental vehicle has a full tank of fuel prior to your hire. You pay for your fuel costs during your hire and the vehicle must be returned with a full tank at the end of your hire. Rent Me Rentals will advise you if your vehicle requires petrol or diesel.

Road User Tax

Does Rent Me Rentals charge for the Road Users Tax (Diesel Tax)?

No, this is included in your vehicle hire fee.

Insurance Excess

Can I reduce the amount of excess I pay?

All rental vehicles come with a standard $2000 insurance excess.

For all our vehicles, you can reduce the excess to $500 on payment of an additional $10 per day.

For our rental cars, People Movers and Premium Mini Vans, you can reduce the excess to zero on payment of $15 per day.
